Todd Isler : Soul Drums

Drummer Todd Isler alternates contemporary world-jazz tracks with solo percussion interludes on his second release, drawing on the rhythmic traditions of Africa, India and Brazil. The quartet numbers are friendly and upbeat, with Allen Won’s tenor sax or Billy Drewes’ soprano lighting out above rolling tropical landscapes. But the solos journey into deeper territory: If the lapping “Waves of Kalalau” or skittery “The Rains” had been given to the full band, this would be a very different-and maybe more compelling-disc.
