The first upgrade for budding vinyl enthusiasts is usually to install a fancier cartridge. The most sonically critical change that can be made when installing a cartridge is to adjust its vertical tracking force: the amount of weight forcing the stylus into the groove. While this can be done with inexpensive, “teeter-totter” gauges, it’s much easier and more accurate to use a digital gauge. The AcousTech is one of the most affordable digital gauges, and I’ve found it to be very accurate—and so much fun to use that I check my VTF way more often than I probably need to.
