King Britt’s Sylk 130: Re-Members Only, presents itself as a retro appreciation disc, the soundtrack to an imaginary “End of the ’80s” party. But outside of an interesting take on Nu Shooz’s “I Can’t Wait,” a mildly interesting Sugar Hill-ish “All the Way Live” and some interesting verbalisms by Trugoy and Pos of De La Soul, this disc reimagines the Reagan decade as an out and out snooze fest. Which is a shame, considering the presence of guest stars like the late Grover Washington Jr. and Alison Moyet, among others. Some cuts manage to engage, like the dreamily seductive “Incident on a Couch Pt. 2,” and the lightly bouncing “Happiness.” But overall this disc may be a disappointment to listeners who remember the Public Enemy/Cameo/Living Colour/Prince decade as being a damn sight more interesting than it comes across here.
