The Siegel-Schwall Band, The Complete Vanguard Recordings & More! (Vanguard 190/92-2; 3CDs: 2 hrs.,51 mins.): Classic cuts from one of the great white blues bands that filtered out of Chicago in the mid-1960s. This three-CD set combines four original albums from the group fronted by pianist-harmonica ace Corky Siegel and guitarist Jim Schwall. There’s a raw, garage band quality that fuses with urban and country blues on these tracks, making this group sound at once tough and charming. It’s what helped catapult the group in the Bay Area, where they shared bills with major acts like Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother and the Holding Company. It’s only hippie blues, and I like it.
