Vocalist Phil Minton, saxophonist John Butcher and guitarist Erhard Hirt, each have an astounding repository of sounds on which to draw. On Two Concerts, they transform their respective stocks into a music that is elastic, dynamic and playful. The trio’s quick banter and ability to echo each other frequently creates moments when the enveloping sound they initially think by one musician turns out to be made by one of the others. Ideas quickly bubble to the surface and dissipate, making room for the next; yet, over the course of the performance an overarching design emerges, revealing their keen sense of structure. It is a very impressive album.
