A Fort Lauderdale native and current resident of Genoa, Italy (where he teaches at the Niccolò Paganini Conservatory), Michael Campagna makes great strides on his sophomore release. The tenor saxophonist’s playing and writing are first-rate throughout, highlighted by his telepathic interplay with trumpeter Michael Rodriguez on numbers like the exhilarating “Journeys,” the breezy “Summer Rain” and the hymn-like “Hope.” Harpist Brandee Younger conjures up an Alice Coltrane vibe on such Trane-inspired vehicles as “Dear John” and “Midnight Whistle.” The heartfelt ballad “Bridges” and reflective opus “You Are All” offer other examples of Campagna’s fully realized compositional style and full-throated tenor voice. Pianist Robert Rodriguez, bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Eric Doob round out the band on this excellent offering.Originally Published
