Swana’s “Freddie” (dedicated to trumpeter Hubbard) sets the pace for this album, a quintet date with pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Dwayne Burno, and Philly drummer Byron Landham. Swana burns like the Hubbard of old: clean execution, flaring tone, daring harmonic moves in the style of the ’60s. Potter is all over the place; whatever he imagines immediately registers in his fingers and lips. Wow! The rapport between Landham-Joey DeFrancesco’s longtime percussionist-and Swana is soulful and technically kin. Nice session.
