Following in the multiphonic footsteps of his mentor Albert Mangelsdorff, trombonist Joe Fiedler effortlessly delivers chords, odd intervals and arresting improvisations on this highly interactive trio outing featuring the empathetic rhythm tandem of bassist John Hébert and drummer Michael Sarin. The three kindred spirits stake out personal territory on “Next Phase,” “Occult” and the intricate title track with its challenging stop-time line. For humorous relief there’s the muted trombone feature “Ging Gong,” which Sarin underscores with his quicksilver brushwork. On the ultra-funky “Two Kooks,” Fiedler channels his inner Fred Wesley through a skewed prism, and any questions of his soulfulness are answered on the ballad “#11.”
