Jackie King, a multi-faceted guitarist and long-time associate of country maverick Willie Nelson, knows how to have fun and make fine music at the same time. On Moon Magic, which features bass and drums, he approaches this celestial set of standards with a sense of humor, a dash of creativity and a healthy serving of chops. While all of the performances are noteworthy for their clarity, attention to melody and diverse treatment, particularly outstanding are “How High the Moon,” with its introductory harmonics and samba underpinning and the straightforward groove of “Moon Rays,” which supports a number of virtuosic episodes. Moon Magic is a polished product that glows from start to finish.
