Jeff Johnson is the bassist in pianist Hal Galper’s trio. In the liner notes to their Maybeck Hall album, Galper explains how they came to enjoy the freer rhythmic interplay of piano and bass without the drums. The technique of their performances flows out of the Bill Evans-Scott LaFaro style, although with a less melancholy sound than Evans-LaFaro. The program includes “Isfahan,” “Blue in Green,” “The End of a Love Affair” and others. Fine playing with a sense of direction and spontaneity.
