Prodigiously talented German composer/arranger/pianist and violinist Gregor Hubner’s maiden voyage on CD is impressive. Originally released on the German Satin Doll label, it has thankfully surfaced in America on Randy Klein’s Jazzheads label. Hubner’s collaborators include Andres Maile on saxophones and Hoger Neil on drums, as well as veterans Harvie Swartz on bass and the most underrated trumpeter in jazz, Tim Hagans. Hubner is a first-rate pianist and violinist. His keyboards are expansive and percussive, a la Jamal and Hancock. Hubner’s playing is something else, romantic yet audacious. The group, not surprisingly, really locks up and plays with great unity. But what really jumps out here is the depth of Hubner’s musical ideas. He doesn’t sound like anyone else. A true original, his melodies are singular and his music on this recording is a very successful amalgam of opposites, classical and jazz, improvised and composed music.
