Eric Hofbauer and the Infrared Band: Level

With his working quartet of tenor saxophonist Kelly Roberge, bassist Sean Farias and drummer Miki Matsuki, Boston-based guitarist Eric Hofbauer embraces the avant-garde on provocative material like the moody soundscape “Murder for a Jar of Red Rum,” the James Blood Ulmer-ish “Surely Some Revelation…,” the 12-tone “La Ligne de Chance” and the spiky, fragmented “Spy vs. Spy.” Another highlight is “Ghosts and Giants,” a spacy jam with Hofbauer on slide guitar and Matsuki on mallets. Fans of Joe Morris and Mary Halvorson will dig this.
