This New York-based guitarist issued two Blue Note albums in the mid-’70s but didn’t record again until the ’90s.
This date was a trio effort with Minasi as leader. Although the overall sound leaves a lot to be desired and includes obnoxious intrusions by drummer Jay Rosen, who is far too forward in the mix, Minasi demonstrates plenty of chops and a predilection for quirky phrasing.
After playing a reasonably straight-ahead version of “Angel Eyes,” he shows his true colors on “In a Quarter Tone,” a jarring, dissonant reworking of Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone” that plows forward into new, albeit rocky, territory. “Calypso in the Fourth Dimension” provides the group’s philosophical capper, with outlandish, heavy-handed work by all concerned.
