David Cook: Pathway

Brooklyn pianist David Cook forges a compelling group-think with the flexible rhythm tandem of bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Mark Ferber on his debut as a leader. Produced by Cook’s mentor Bruce Barth, it finds the three partners conversing interactively on modernist piano-trio originals like “The Thing,” a funky number imbued with serpentine lines, in addition to the frisky second-line groover “Fresh Remnants” and the urgent 7/4 number “Napali.” To temper the fire of the hard-driving title track, the trio offers the luxurious ballad “Idly, Ideally” and the mellow closer, “Lullabye.” Cook also delivers a gorgeous unaccompanied reading of Ellington’s “Come Sunday.”
