Newark’s Jazz 88.3 FM radio station has launched WBGO Travel: A Musical Journey Around the World. WBGO Travel organizes trips to domestic and international jazz festival venues and designs first-class tours with special experiential opportunities. JazzTimes has partnered with WBGO to help promote the Newport Jazz Festival, as described below. Highlighted information about other travel ventures included in the series is also provided.
The Newport Jazz Festival is hosted in Newport, R.I., annually and will take place this year on August 2-5. WBGO guests who opt to stay for the weekend will attend a welcome reception on Friday night at the Newport Hotel & Marina, which will be followed by a concert featuring Natalie Cole and the Bill Charlap Trio with Freddy Cole at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. On Saturday, guests will be able to attend performances in Fort Adams State Park by artists including Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding, Gregory Porter, Marcus Miller and Robert Glasper. Sunday concerts will feature Chick Corea, Eddie Palmieri, Roy Haynes, Joshua Redman and Hiromi. Food and drink vouchers for the Louis Jadot Café are included, and the weekend will close with a breakfast on Monday. $2,250 covers the cost of the deluxe package for double occupancy. WBGO is also offering day trips to the festival from New York City and Boston. One-day excursions include round-trip bus transportation from New York or Boston, admission to the festival and meal vouchers. Buses will be equipped with wi-fi, restroom, reclining bucket seats and a Newport Jazz Festival-themed movie as on-board entertainment.
WBGO has partnered with Jazz at Lincoln Center and JazzTimes in order to help organize this event. Travelers leaving from New York will board buses on Saturday or Sunday at the Time Warner Building (10 Columbus Circle, NY, NY) at the front of the circle. In partnership with nonprofit and jazz advocacy agency, JazzBoston, a similar day trip program will be sponsored. Guests leaving from Boston will board buses at Wally’s Jazz Cafe (427 Massachusetts Avenue) on Saturday and/or Sunday at 8:00 am. Return buses will leave from the Festival gate at 7:00 p.m., in the evenings. Pricing for these events is as follows:

This festival features entertainment between noon and midnight daily, for 10 days. Package cost includes accommodation for three nights at the Festival’s official hotel, the Hyatt Regency Montreal. WBGO announcer, Michael Bourne, will hots this years fourth consecutive Jazz on the Mountain event at the Mohonk Mountain House resort (1000 Mountain Rest Road, New Paltz, NY). This year’s line-up includes jazz greats like Anat Cohen, Fred Hersch, Julian Lage, Joe Locke, Scott Robinson, Matt Wilson, Martin Wind and more.
