The MacArthur Foundation has announced 24 new MacArthur “Fellows” for 2017, including the musician and composer Tyshawn Sorey. On its website, the foundation praises the “genius grant” recipient, 37, for “assimilating and transforming ideas from a broad spectrum of traditional and experimental idioms into musical creations that celebrate alternative musical modeling within the improvisation-composition continuum.”

Also receiving the award this year is the roots-music singer, musician and songwriter Rhiannon Giddens.

As defined by the foundation, “The MacArthur Fellowship is a $625,000, no-strings-attached award to extraordinarily talented and creative individuals as an investment in their potential.” JT extends its sincerest congrats to this year’s fellows.
