Trumpeter Clark Terry (pictured) will receive an honorary doctorate from Purchase College State University of New York at the school’s 32nd commencement ceremony on Friday, May 14th. University president Thomas J. Schwarz will award Terry with the degree before approximately 852 undergraduate and 64 graduate NYU students. Honorary degrees will also be conferred on Billy Collins, Poet Laureate of the United States (2001-2003) and philanthropist Joan Weill.
Saxophonist Illinois Jacquet will also soon receive an honorary doctorate, this time from the Juilliard School, which will hold its 99th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 21 in Manhattan’s Alice Tully Hall. Jacquet is one of six Juilliard honorees, who also include actress Dame Judi Dench, composer and conductor John Williams.
