Smooth Jazz Saxist Mindi Abair Joins Sandler, Aniston on the Big Screen

The saxophonist appears in Just Go With It

Contemporary jazz saxophonist Mindi Abair is moving from stage to screen. Abair has signed on to play herself in a movie that stars her close friend Adam Sandler alongside Jennifer Aniston. Abair will play a member of a wedding band in Just Go With It, directed by Dennis Dugan, which is scheduled for release next year.

Abair and comedian Sandler have been friends for years. In addition to recording vocals and saxophone for Sandler’s 1997 CD What’s Your Name? and joining him on the road, Abair has toured with the Backstreet Boys, Josh Groban and Duran Duran, among others.

“Adam and I have a long history,” Abair said in a recent press release. “He’s always used his friends in his movies and for his projects. I’m lucky to be his friend, and I definitely took the cue from him in my own career. I’ve made records with my friends, toured with my friends, and surrounded myself with people I love and respect. He was a great role model for that.”

Abair said she even name-drops herself in the movie when her character performs a rap: “Playing sax with care is Mindi Abair.”

Abair also sang with Sandler at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards where the actor received a Lifetime Achievement Award/MTV Generation Award. Her new CD Mindi Abair In High Fi Stereo (Concord) is scheduled for release May 18.

Abair currently hosts a nationally syndicated radio show called Chill with Mindi Abair, which plays a combination of cutting edge tunes by musicians like Moby and remixes of jazz classics by Billie Holiday and Carmen McRae.
