Robin Kelley Reads From his New Monk Bio in New York City

On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, Robin D.G. Kelley, the author of a just-released biography of Thelonious Monk, will make a special appearance at Columbia University to discuss and read from the book, Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original, published by Simon and Schuster. Also appearing will be pianist Randy Weston, who will share his reflections on Monk and his music. The event is presented by the Center for Jazz Studies, as well as the Columbia/Harlem Jazz Project.

Kelley, who is now a professor at the University of Southern California, was formerly a professor of Anthropology and African-American Studies at Columbia from 2003 to 2007. Thanks in part to unprecedented and exclusive access to the Monk family papers and private recordings, Kelley has written a remarkable biography, which not only shatters several myths about the influential pianist and composer, but also offers an in-depth and well-rounded portrait of the complicated man behind the music.
