“Playdate with Matt Wilson” Premieres on WBGO

Drummer’s 8-part series features archival live recordings

Playdate with Matt Wilson, an eight-part radio series, debuted on Feb. 4 on Newark, N.J., radio station WBGO. It will be broadcast in place of The Checkout (which will return in April).

Hosted by drummer/composer Matt Wilson, Playdate features archival live performance recordings spanning of 20 years of performances on WBGO between 1980-2000. Shows air Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. (EST) on WBGO 88.3FM and WBGO.org

Episode #1 featured the following live recordings:

*Wayne Shorter performing “Fe Fi Fo Fum” at William Patterson College from October 8, 1982

*Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra playing “Mr. Fone Bone” from a Jazzathon at the Ritz in NYC, a WBGO fundraiser, April 21, 1985

*Dianne Reeves singing “Love For Sale” at the WBGO Performance Studio from October, 18, 1987

*Ruth Brown at the 20/20 club, owned by Ashford and Simpson, singing “5-10-15 Hours” from March 20, 1988

*Sir Roland Hanna playing “Walkin” at the 1994 Gilmore International Keyboard Festival

*Fred Hersch Trio with Matt Wilson, drums, performing “Black Nile” at Iowa City Jazz Festival from July 4, 1997

Future episodes will feature live recordings from Chick Corea, Sun Ra Arkestra, Betty Carter, Max Roach, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and more.
