Pianists Onaje Allan Gumbs and Hotep Idris Galeta to Perform Duo Concerts

Pianists Onaje Allan Gumbs and Hotep Idris Galeta will join together for three unique duo concerts at New York’s Shutters Cafe. Gumbs (pictured), who hails from the Bronx, and Galeta, from South Africa, will fuse their varied jazz traditions together from Dec. 13 to Dec. 15.

On Thursday, Dec. 13, the pianists will perform without accompaniment, simply presenting their own original pieces. On Friday, Dec. 14, the duo will be joined by South African jazz vocalist Samitha Bea Benjamin, saxophonist TK Blue, bassist Marcus McLaurine, percussionist Bujo Kevin Jones, and drummer George Gray. For the last performance on Saturday, Dec. 15, Gumbs and Galeta will be joined by a full band.

The series closes with a full-band jam on Saturday, December 15.

Gumbs, who has worked with a variety of artists such as Marlena Shaw, Kenny Burrell and Jonathan Butler, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award as Outstanding Jazz Artist last year. Galeta, who grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, has also worked with a number of jazz figures such as Woody Shaw, Archie Shepp and Marcus Wyatt and currently manages the Resource Centre at Artscape Performing Arts Theatre Complex in Cape Town.

Tickets to each performance at Shutters Cafe cost $30, and shows begin at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. For more information on the performances, visit Shutters online or call (212) 279-3446.
