Jason Moran’s Black Stars (Blue Note) was named best jazz recording of 2001 by The New York Times and also placed first in JazzTimes‘ 2001 critic’s poll. Moran (pictured) is a rising star, a pianist to reckon with. And his skills aren’t grabbing the ears of critics alone. Piano jazz maven Marian McPartland has chosen Moran as this year’s featured artist in the fourth annual Marian McPartland/Eastman Jazz Series.
The honor gives Moran a chance to play with McPartland at a May 9 concert to be held in Rochester, NY at the Eastman School of Music. The venue will be Eastman’s Kilbourn Hall and showtime is 8 p.m. Both pianists will also play individually. Tickets for the concert (at $15, $10, and $5) are available in advance by calling 585-222-5000.
In addition to the concert, Moran will present an informal jazz lecture/workshop with video clips highlighting his mentor and fellow pianist, Jaki Byard. The clips will be shown at 1 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall on May 9. The event is free and open to the public.
The spotlight also will shine on McPartland this year as Eastman honors her with a new exhibit in its Sibley Music Library. “Celebrating Marian at Eastman” pays tribute to McPartland’s numerous accomplishments in jazz and her long association with the School. The exhibit includes photos, posters, awards, clippings, and other items drawn from McPartland’s personal archives. After a private opening reception on May 8, the free exhibit will be open to the public for viewing during normal library hours beginning May 9. It will run through September 15, 2002.
