With successive performances by Mark Murphy and Jimmy Scott, Iridium Jazz Club in New York City is hosting a veritable festival of legendary male vocalists. Murphy kicks it off with appearances the first two nights, starting on Thursday, November 26. Performing with Murphy will be Vinny Valentino (guitar), Armando Gola (bass) and Joel Rosenblatt. Murphy, who was recently feted by a bevy of Bay area vocalists during the San Francisco Jazz Festival, is one of the most influential jazz vocalists of our time.

Following Murphy’s shows will be the just as legendary Jimmy Scott who performs on Saturday and Sunday, November 28 and 29. Billie Holiday often singled out Jimmy Scott as her favorite singer, and no less than Madonna has sung Scott’s praises. Scott’s career has had more ups and downs than the Dow Jones average, but he continues to captivate audiences with his highly idiosyncratic vocal style, that sounds more like Nancy Wilson than like any male vocalist.

The Iridium Jazz Club is located near Times Square at 1650 Broadway at 51st Street. For more information about these or other shows at Iriidium, go to the club’s web site.
