On October 10, 2010, the Los Angeles Jazz Society held its annual Dinner & Concert at the Downtown Marriott in Los Angeles, Calif. The organization presented percussionist and bandleader Poncho Sanchez with its “Jazz Tribute Award,” and pianist Mike Melvoin with a “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Other awards given out included: Dee Dee Bridgewater (“Jazz Vocalist Award”), Bill Cunliffe (“Jazz Composer/ Arranger Award”), Anita E. Berry (“Teri Merrill-Aarons Founders Award”), John Mosley (“Jazz Educator Award”) and Chloe Feoranzo (“Shelly Manne Memorial New Talent Award”). The emcee for the gala was the noted film critic and author Leonard Maltin.

The organization raises funds to promote music education, as well as the legacy of jazz, throughout Los Angeles. LAJS presents a variety of in-school and off-campus jazz education programs, including “Jazz in Schools” and the Bill Green Mentorship Program. The latter offers each selected student a scholarship consisting of ten hours of private one-on-one lessons with a professional jazz player, four workshops to practice with other students, and a professional recording session featuring all of the students.
