Four new titles in the Live at Smalls series will be released by the SmallsLIVE label on June 25. The new entries feature pianist Harold Mabern, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and alto saxophonist Will Vinson
Produced by pianist and label founder Spike Wilner, the Live at Smalls series, according to a press release, “is dedicated to the idea that jazz is best heard in a live setting with minimal editing, captured in the full spontaneous moment it was created.”
Mabern is joined on his set by bassist John Webber with Joe Farnsworth on drums. Recorded in June 2012, the album features his original “Boogie for Al McShann” plus the music of of Fats Domino, Arthur Schwartz, Wes Montgomery and more.
Magnarelli’s release marks his 10th album as a leader, and features the quartet of Mulgrew Miller (piano), Dwayne Burno (bass) and Jason Brown (drums). It was recorded August 31 and September 1, 2012.
Sipiagin’s CD, recorded June 25 and 26, 2012, showcases his original compositions and the quartet of Seamus Blake (tenor), David Kikoski (piano), Boris Kozlov (drums).
Vinson’s album, recorded December 4 and 5, 2012,features four original compositions plus interpretations of “Stablemates” and “Morning Glory” with Lage Lund (guitar), Aaron Parks (piano), Matt Brewer (bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums).
