JazzTimes will be hosting a panel at the annual Jazz Education Network (JEN) conference to be held January 8-11, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, Texas. Moderated by singer/pianist Dena DeRose, the session-“Lessons Learned”-will focus on what professional musicians have learned on and off the bandstand, and what they try to teach their students about the real world of gigs and recordings. Panelists include artists Steve Bailey, Jeff Coffin, Peter Erskine and Tom “Bones” Malone.

This session is part of an exchange between the JEN Conference and the Jazz Connect Conference at APAP|NYC, which overlap in schedules. JEN is hosting a panel session at Jazz Connect about how education and outreach figure in the presenting of jazz. Willard Jenkins moderates that session which features the following panelists: Rob Gibson (Savannah Music Festival/Swing Central); Tim Jackson (Monterey Jazz Festival); Marcus Roberts; Janis Burley Wilson (Pittsburgh Cultural Trust/Pittsburgh JazzLive International Jazz Festival). The panel will be held on Thursday, January 9 at 9:30 am, at the Hilton New York Hotel.

“We have been attending the JEN conference since its creation 5 years ago, and of course we were active partners with the IAJE organization which preceded it,” said Lee Mergner, publisher of JazzTimes. “Education, in and out of the classroom, is a vital part of the jazz community. We were happy to organize this session and in turn offer JEN the opportunity to host a panel at the Jazz Connect Conference.” A different version of this panel took place at last year’s JEN conference in Atlanta, and featured Don Braden, John Clayton, Javon Jackson and Bob Mintzer as panelists, with Martin Mueller of The New School moderating.

The “Lessons Learned” panel takes place on Saturday, January 11 at 2 pm in the Cumberland A-D suite at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas. Registration at the conference is required for attendance.
