Caffe Vivaldi in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village will host an event called Island Jazz! this Sunday (Dec. 14) at noon, featuring health and science writer for The New York Times Pam Belluck, who will talk about her first book, Island Practice, and play with her jazz band, Equilibrium, over brunch.

Island Practice is currently being developed for a TV series by CBS, Imagine TV, 20th Century Fox TV, and 3 Arts Entertainment. Belluck says that she has read the script for the pilot, written by Amy Holden Jones, the feature writer behind Indecent Proposal, and she’s very excited about the progress. “It’s great to have such a strong and talented team of folks from the television industry who really get the material,” she says.

Belluck says that while the series will be a fictionalized version of the book, the writers are ensuring to stay true to it. “They are taking a lot of care with it,” she says. They are focusing on maintaining the tone and humor of the book, trying to stay medically accurate and keeping the balance of odd and quirky things as well as dramatic life and death situations.

Belluck is a classically trained flutist but she also plays saxophone and piano. While Equilibrium, a New York-based sextet of piano, bass, drums, flute, saxophone and trombone, has existed for a number of years, Belluck only joined it after moving to New York about four years ago. The band has performed at Caffe Vivaldi in the past and Belluck says they’ve received a positive reaction so far. “We’re not professionals, but these are professional gigs, I guess,” she says.

On Sunday, they will perform a medley of standard tunes along with original pieces, including “All About You,” written by Belluck. Alicia Anstead, the editor-in-chief of The Writer magazine, will join Belluck to discuss Island Practice.
