Still maintaining a name that could lead you to erroneously believe that the Jazz Bakery is a place where you can enjoy a jelly roll with your Jelly Roll, the L.A. jazz club celebrates 10 years of presenting non-profit improvisation on November 10 with a night of music featuring pianists Marian McPartland and Kenny Barron, vibist Stefon Harris singer Nancy Wilson and guitarist Henry Johnson.
Strangely, the anniversary party won’t take place at the Jazz Bakery, but at UCLA’s Freud Playhouse, starting at 8 p.m. Perhaps the producers expect a bigger turnout than the Bakery can hold. More power to ’em, and their predictions are probably right. In addition to celebrating the Bakery’s first decade, the concert will also serve as a salute to McPartland’s NPR program Piano Jazz. All of the artists on the bill have appeared as guests on McPartland’s show in the past and they’ll likely all perform with her and each other in various configurations throughout the night.
Tickets cost $100 per person and seating is determined by the order in which reservations are received. Placement in a preferred seating section is available for $150 per person, which also gets you into a champagne dessert reception after the show with music by local act the Gerald Clayton Trio.
