Eric Dolphy Tribute Concert & Symposium Coming to NJ

Eric Dolphy: Freedom of Sound, a celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the death of multi-instrumentalist and composer Eric Dolphy, will take place May 30-31 at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J. Among the 40 musicians honoring Dolphy will be Richard Davis (both nights), Grachan Moncur III, Henry Threadgill, Andrew Cyrille, Oliver Lake, James Newton, Don Byron and Vernon Reid. The program is expected to include Dolphy music that was never recorded or performed.

Also planned is a Dolphy symposium featuring Gunther Schuller, Davis, Newton, John Szwed (Columbia University) and Michael E. Veal (Yale), plus dance, poetry, video and educational exhibits.

The cost is $20 per night and proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Jazz Foundation of America and the Montclair Academy of Dance and Laboratory of Music.

The May 30 show runs from 7:00-10: 30 p.m. On the 31st, the symposium is scheduled for 5:00- 6:30 p.m. and the concert from 7:00-10:30 p.m. Tickets are available through ShowClix and at Seed Artists. Tickets at the door will cost $25.
