Core Trio with Guest Matthew Shipp to Perform in Brooklyn

ShapeShifter Lab show takes place July 11

The Core Trio, a Houston-based ensemble featuring Seth Paynter (saxophone), Thomas Helton (bass) and Joe Hertenstein (drums), with Matthew Shipp guesting on piano, will perform a CD release concert at Brooklyn’s ShapeShifter Lab on July 11. The group’s new self-titled CD (FreeBass Productions) is the second release for this free jazz trio. The recording, which also features Shipp, is one 42-minute continuous untitled track.

The Core Trio has performed in New York at the Downtown Music Gallery, Goodbye Blue Monday, the Douglas Street Collective and ABC No Rio, and in venues throughout Houston. Helton is a Houston-based composer and bassist, and the artistic director of the Houston Composer’s Salon. Paynter is a Houston-based saxophonist and composer whose music was recently presented in New York by the FONT Festival in January at the Village Zendo. The New York-based Hertenstein is a drummer who has performed extensively in the US and his native Germany.

The ShapeShifter concert at 8 p.m. is preceded by a 7 p.m. set by the Jonah Rosenberg Trio, with pianist Jonah Rosenberg, bassist James Ilgenfritz, and drummer Kevin Shea.
