Benefit for The Under_Line to Honor Ornette Coleman

Dec. 4 event to establish new NYC venue will feature all-star performances

A benefit performance in New York on Dec. 4 will help raise funds to build The Under_Line, a music and arts space on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. According to a press release, Arts for Art hopes to build The Under_Line at 107 Suffolk Street, which has a large underground space available for a music and dance venue. The release says that Arts for Art “is focused on securing support to create a space that will showcase visionary music and collaborative performances. It will mark the return of uncompromised music and creative expression to an area with a deep connection and heritage in music and cultural arts.”

The benefit event will take place at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, 172 Norfolk Street in Manhattan, Dec. 4 from 8:30-midnight and will honor NEA Jazz Master Ornette Coleman. Scheduled to appear are William Parker, John Forté, Milford Graves, Charles Gayle, Judi Silvano, Joe Lovano, Hamiet Bluiett, Miya Masaoka, Qasim Naqvi, Billy Martin, Yoshiko Chuma, Rob Brown, Cooper-Moore and Joe McPhee.

A VIP exclusive launch party will also take place, from 6:30-8:30, and will feature a performance by Paul Miller, Christian McBride, John Zorn, Henry Grimes and Roy Campbell.
