Baltimore Jazz Alliance Composers’ Showcase Set for Sept. 29

New works commissioned for event

The Baltimore Jazz Alliance Composers’ Showcase will take place September 29, at Loyola University in Baltimore. The BJA has commissioned the work of four composers for the event. Below is more information about the event, which aims to highlight new works and the city’s jazz history.


* The second Baltimore Jazz Composers’ Showcase will premiere four brand new compositions commissioned from the top area jazz artists. Six additional compositions will also be performed.

* This is the first such competition in Baltimore history and the first time that Baltimore jazz artists have been asked to write new works for such an event.

* It’s the first time the BJA has collaborated with a local university to provide musical entertainment and educational opportunities.

TITLE: Baltimore Jazz Composers’ Showcase

DATE: Sunday, Sept. 29th, 2013

PLACE: McManus Theatre at Loyola University

TIME: 5 to 7 p.m.

PERFORMERS: Baltimore Jazz Alliance Quintet, directed by Anthony Villa, DMA, a professor at Loyola University Maryland.

COMMISSION WINNERS: Ethan Helm; Ian Sims; Todd Butler; Nico Sarbanes (student).

COST: A $5.00 donation for the event is requested, but admission is free.
