The Sarasota Jazz Festival, now in its 39th year, will take place Sunday, Mar. 3 through Saturday, Mar. 9, 2019 in select venues throughout Sarasota, Fla., including the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The week-long festival will feature more than 120 performers and 48 events, up from just seven events in 2018. Clarinetist Ken Peplowski, the festival’s music director, has assembled a lineup of musicians that highlights the festival’s theme, “Generations of Jazz.” Established performers will play alongside rising stars, with combos including Dick Hyman, Bill Charlap, and Shelly Berg; Randy Brecker, Randy Sandke, and James Suggs; Houston Person, Roxy Coss, and Aaron Johnson; and Mary Stallings and Charles Turner.
“Jazz fans don’t want to miss any of these shows,” Peplowski said in a press release. “There’ll be lots of fun, surprises, and some mind-blowing music! I’ll also be interviewing these generations of great musicians throughout the shows, asking them about their influences.”
The festival will also feature such events as Jazz in the Park, the 32nd annual presentation of the Satchmo Award, and a jazz pub crawl by trolley.
“Jazz is America’s original musical art form, and next year we’ll share that legacy by bringing more jazz to more places,” Ed Linehan, the president of the Jazz Club of Sarasota, which puts on the festival, said in the release.
