The export of bossa nova from Brazil to the U.S. may have begun a few years earlier with Charlie Byrd’s Jazz Samba, but this collaboration between two singular instrumentalists from each country—tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto—resonated with audiences unlike any other. A bona fide hit single helped: “The Girl from Ipanema,” with vocals by the sultry Astrud Gilberto.
