The export of bossa nova from Brazil to the U.S. may have begun a few years earlier with Charlie Byrd’s Jazz Samba, but this collaboration between two singular instrumentalists from each country—tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto—resonated with audiences unlike any other. A bona fide hit single helped: “The Girl from Ipanema,” with vocals by the sultry Astrud Gilberto. In addition to playing piano, Antônio Carlos Jobim wrote the music for seven of the eight tracks on this recording, which remains one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. LEE MERGNER
