Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus
Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus (Prestige, 1956)

Rollins’ sixth studio album is often considered his breakthrough, thanks in no small part to his performance on the opening cut “St. Thomas,” a composition that paid tribute to his family’s roots in the Virgin Islands and would become a calling card for the legendary saxophonist in the ensuing years. The album title says it all about this towering yet humble figure in jazz’s history. Sonny may have retired from performing, but his robust sound lives on in recordings like this one. LEE MERGNER
