Kind of Blue Vinyl

Miles Davis: Kind of Blue (Columbia, 1959)

An album that is simply sui generis in jazz. For my money, the most interesting thing about this beautiful recording featuring several future jazz legends is that none of them continued in the same direction afterward. Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball, and Bill Evans each went their own way to develop distinctive sounds very different from what lies in these grooves. Miles would later be accused of “selling out,” but if he’d really wanted to cash in, he would have recorded Kind of Blue Too. That lightning-in-a-bottle quality provides much of the album’s timelessness. LEE MERGNER
