Lambert, Hendricks & Ross: Sing a Song of Basie (ABC-Paramount, 1958)

Amazingly, this was the first album recorded by the hugely influential vocalese group. Featuring a rhythm section pulled from Count Basie’s orchestra—guitarist Freddie Green, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Sonny Payne, as well as pianist Nat Pierce—the recording would lead to a follow-up album with Basie and his Orchestra (and Joe Williams) called Sing Along With Basie. Gotta love jazz sequels. LEE MERGNER
