Dexter Gordon: Dexter Rides Again

Dexter Gordon: Dexter Rides Again (Savoy, 1958) [recorded between 1945 and 1947]

This compilation of cuts recorded for Savoy in the ’40s wasn’t released as a full album until 1958, by which time Gordon had gone through numerous legal and substance-abuse battles. There are three different backing groups on the sessions, two of them anchored by drumming giants Max Roach and Art Blakey. With Dexter’s name in nearly every song title (e.g. “Long Tall Dexter,” “Dexter’s Riff,” “Blow, Mr. Dexter,” et al.), these sessions introduce us to a young, evolving bebop saxophonist whose big sound and swinging sense of time would only blossom in the coming years.
