Clifford Brown and Max Roach at Basin Street
Clifford Brown and Max Roach: At Basin Street (EmArcy, 1956)

Rollins also plays a prominent role in this recording, the last studio album by an inspirational but short-lived quartet that also featured Richie Powell on piano and George Morrow on bass. Brown and Powell died tragically in a car accident later that year. At the time of his death, trumpeter Brown was only 25, yet he left behind an awesome body of work that musicians are still coming to grips with today. One footnote: The album was not actually recorded at the NYC club Basin Street East, but rather was inspired by the group’s many appearances there. LEE MERGNER
