Ensconced in academia since the late 1990s, composer/arranger David Sanford was long better known in new-music circles than in jazz. This glorious album should go a long way in changing that. Inspired by the AACM and infused with rock & roll squall, Sanford’s orchestra is an unpredictable beast, lurching, lunging, and leaping. Ragin’s pungent trumpet work, too little heard in recent years, is worth the price of admission alone, especially on his title-track tribute. ANDREW GILBERT
