16. Charles Lloyd & the Marvels Tone Poem
On its first two albums, this quintet featuring Bill Frisell collaborated with singers Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, and Willie Nelson. Their third album is all-instrumental, but all five members play with a vocal quality—the plaintive emotion, the punctuated phrasing—that’s as unmistakable on the compositions by Lloyd, Monk, and Coleman as on those by Leonard Cohen and Bolo de Nieve.
