Even though they were recorded in 2018, the hymns performed here by Shepp and Moran feel like the ultimate primal-scream therapy for a year of insurrection, pandemic, and unprecedented political ill will. On the other side of the coin (or wax), there are fewer greater joys than hearing these two masters so sweetly, strongly, and playfully interpret standards like “’Round Midnight” and “Isfahan.” And the cheeky cheer with which Shepp croons out the final stanzas of “Lush Life” is a balm for all your troubles.
