Karrin Allyson

From Oct. 7-16, the 12th annual Pittsfield CityJazz Festival, put together by Berkshires Jazz Inc., will take place in Pittsfield, Mass., and feature the Scott Robinson Quartet, the Karrin Allyson Trio and the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors big band.

The festival, most of which is free, will kick off on Columbus Day Weekend with the annual “jazz crawl” Jazz About Town, featuring performances by local musicians throughout Pittsfield’s Upstreet Cultural District. Up next will be the Jazz Prodigy concert, which will take place at the Berkshire Athenaeum on Oct. 13, featuring alto saxophonist Nathan Farrell and an all-star trio of Berkshires jazz musicians.

New this year will be a month-long exhibit featuring more than 20 of award-winning photojournalist Ken Franckling’s photographs. The exhibit, which opens on Oct. 7, will be held at the Whitney Center for the Arts. Franckling will be there from 5-8 p.m. to sign his new book, Jazz in the Key of Light.

Elementary and middle school students across the country will also be visited by the Pittsfield Sister City Jazz Ambassadors, a local group of professional musicians, as part of the annual festival.

The final days of the festival will conclude with headline concerts on Oct. 14-15 and a jazz brunch on Oct. 16.
