On Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, trumpeter Dave Douglas will perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room, in a program saluting Dizzy Gillespie. Titled “Dizzy Atmosphere,” the concerts—at 7 and 9:30 each evening—will employ Dizzy’s compositions as launch pads for creative improvisation. Joining Douglas is an all-star band of trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Linda May Han Oh, drummer Joey Baron and a special guest, the guitarist Bill Frisell, who has created his own inspired history with JALC. Last year, Douglas premiered his bold exploratory work “Metamorphosis” at the Appel Room.
Pre-concert discussions will take place at 6 and 8:30 p.m.
