At least one major jazz festival has been able to kick off with in-person events amidst the coronavirus pandemic this fall. The International Jazzfestival Bern, held in Switzerland’s capital city, began September 29 and continues through November 28.

Now in its 45th year, the International Jazzfestival Bern takes place at Marian’s Jazzroom in the city’s Hotel Innere Enge, with additional events taking place at a Jazz Tent on the hotel grounds.

The festival consists of nine weeks of performances, with performers booked for five-night stands at Marian’s—two shows per night, at 7:30 and 10 p.m. The Jazz Tent is open each night from 6 to 11 p.m. and features student bands.

The festival is adhering to strict COVID-19 guidelines for artists and spectators as well as staff. All artists traveling to the festival will be screened for COVID-19 prior to their arrival at the hotel and quarantined in their rooms, except during performances. All guests and staff must wear masks, and all seating during concerts must conform to social distancing standards.
