The 40th annual Detroit Jazz Festival is going to be a homecoming of sorts, as organizers prepare to welcome back several prominent artists to the festival’s stage.

Set for Friday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 2, the world’s largest free (of charge) jazz festival features bass virtuoso Stanley Clarke as the 2019 Artist-in-Residence. Clarke had been scheduled to perform in 2014 and 2017, but those sets were canceled due to weather.

Past Artists-in-Residence joining Clarke at the festival include Ron Carter, Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, Danilo Pérez, Terence Blanchard, and more.

“We’re truly poised for a remarkable festival celebrating 40 years of tremendous performers and performances,” said Gretchen Valade, chair of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation Board of Directors. “We welcome our guests from around the world to enjoy one of the best experiences Detroit has to offer.”
