A remarkable all-star lineup will headline the 66th annual Newport Jazz Festival, set for August 7-9 in the titular seaside city in Rhode Island. The festival’s topline acts are anchored by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, vocalists Norah Jones and Diana Krall, and pianist Robert Glasper, who will serve as this year’s artist in residence.
The festival, sponsored by Natixis Global Asset Management, will be held at Fort Adams State Park. (A special Friday night concert will be held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino.)
Tickets are already on sale.
Also included in the festival’s first-wave lineup are Makaya McCraven, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Charles Lloyd’s Kindred Spirits, Joe Lovano’s Trio Tapestry, Angélique Kidjo’s performance of Talking Heads’ Remain in Light, Chris Potter’s Circuits Trio with James Francies and Eric Harland, Miguel Zenón Quartet, and the Christian McBride Situation, among many others. Two artists, singer/songwriter Avery*Sunshine and vibraphonist Warren Wolf, make their Newport debuts.
McBride serves as the Newport Jazz Festival’s artistic director, curating each year’s programming along with festival founder George Wein.
Fort Adams, which holds a daily capacity of 10,000, features four stages for the Newport Jazz Festival: the Fort, Quad, Harbor, and Museum Stages. The festival is an outdoor event and takes place rain or shine. More artists will be announced as the festival draws nearer.
Founded in 1954 by producer George Wein, the Newport Jazz Festival is among the most famous and prestigious jazz festivals in the world. Since 1981, it has taken place each year at Fort Adams State Park.
