The Jazz in July Festival has announced the lineup for its concerts on four nights (July 19, 21, 26 and 28) at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. The series was founded back in 1984 by Dick Hyman, who turned over the reins as artistic director to Bill Charlap in 2004. Acting as both host and house band, Charlap leads a trio that backs the featured artists and special guests. This year’s featured artists include Joshua Redman, Kenny Barron, Aaron Diehl, Joe Lovano, Warren Wolf, and Chris Potter, with Samara Joy and Nicole Glover appearing as special guests. The rhythm section with Charlap will be different each night and includes bassists Scott Colley, Noriko Ueda, Peter Washington, and David Wong and drummers Carl Allen, Lewis Nash, Bill Stewart, and Kenny Washington. “Jazz in July celebrates the spark of improvisation and the alchemy that happens when these major artists play together in this acoustically perfect hall,” Charlap said in a press release received at JazzTimes. “Every night features unique, once-in-a-lifetime combinations of world-class jazz artists plus four of the greatest bass-and-drum teams on the planet.”
