From Sept. 1 to Oct. 2, Jazz at Lincoln’s Center’s seventh annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival will take place at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola located on Broadway at 60th Street in New York, featuring over 200 artists such as Jimmy Heath, Jack DeJohnette and Randy Weston.
Kicking off the month-long festival is trumpeter Bruce Harris and the Big Sax Section with a tribute to cornetist Nat Adderley. The first week of the festival will continue with JALC’s “Lessons from Our Masters” series with pianist Joanne Brackeen, the Dayna Stephens Quintet, which will perform alongside Tom Harrell and Al Foster, and the Nate Smith Trio featuring saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and NEA Jazz Master Dave Holland.
In memory of producer Orrin Keepnews, Jimmy Heath, Gary Bartz, Akira Tana, Jack DeJohnette, Larry Willis, Randy Weston, Ray Drummond, Rufus Reid, Sam Gill, Junior Mance and Lee Konitz will perform as part of a celebratory evening on Sept. 8. And from Sept. 9-11, the festival will celebrate the 70th birthday of NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Dave Liebman.
Other notable performances will include vocalists Veronica Swift and Charles Turner, who are paired for Flip Side Sessions on Sept. 13, the legendary Marilyn Maye making her Dizzy’s Coca-Cola debut on Sept. 16 and 13-year-old pianist Joey Alexander, who will close out the festival with a release party for Countdown, his sophomore record.
