Detroit Jazz Festival Announces Lineup for Labor Day Weekend Event

Headliners for Sept. 2-5 event include Chucho Valdés, Dianne Reeves, Artemis, Cécile McLorin Salvant, John Scofield, and many more

On International Jazz Day, in a preview event that featured a concert by festival artist-in-residence Chucho Valdés, the Detroit Jazz Festival announced what it called a partial lineup for the four-day event held in downtown Detroit over Labor Day weekend. Partial though it may be, it includes more than two dozen notable acts, including headliners such as Valdés, Dianne Reeves, Artemis, Cécile McLorin Salvant, John Scofield, and many other household names in the jazz world. (The complete announced lineup along with dates of performances is listed below.)

The festival, which claims to be the largest free jazz festival in the world, is sponsored by Rocket Mortgage and will be in-person for the first time since 2019. In 2020 and 2021, the festival streamed performances from the local Renaissance Hotel in what was much like a jazz telethon. (Read Lee Mergner’s report on the 2020 edition here.) This year the festival will livestream performances from all four stages throughout the four days with “Detroit Jazz Fest LIVE” free through the festival’s website at

“It’s extremely befitting we announce the 2022 Festival lineup on what is considered a global day of unity in the jazz community,” said Chris Collins, president and artistic director of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation in a press release received at JazzTimes. “As we look forward to pivoting back to an in-person format, this year’s lineup reflects our renewed mission to feature legacy artists, propagate and nurture the next generation of jazz performers and audiences, and showcase the diverse tapestry of jazz in one festival.”
